At a ceremony held September 24th at Picton’s historic Regent Theatre, History Lives Here founder, Peter Lockyer, was awarded The Mayor’s Special Achievement Award as part of an evening recognizing the many contributions of residents.
“For four decades, Peter has been the County’s foremost champion of local history and heritage,” stated Mayor Ferguson. “His presentations, publications, videos and storytelling have helped generations of residents, visitors and academics develop a deeper appreciation for the people, places, and events which have shaped Prince Edward County.”
The awards honoured dozens of volunteers for their efforts in a wide range of categories.
“It’s very affirming to receive this award,” said Lockyer. “All of the recipients have dedicated
years of community service, and I want to thank them for their dedication. In our case, we have experimented to develop different ways to tell the history of this special place as video vignettes on local history themes, as documentaries, walking and bus tours, plays, and special events like Flashback
February – an annual month – long winter celebration of County history. It’s been a big learning curve and sometimes very challenging. But I have learned a lot about my hometown and how we have helped shape the history of Canada, and I know there are new audiences for these old stories. I’d like to see us develop this history into a suite of events, experiences and products retailed to our
one million yearly visitors, so this history becomes a significant economic driver as it is in many places in the world.”
