Description

Picton takes its name from Welsh general, Sir Thomas Picton, a colourful character who served in the British military until his death at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

We’ve made lots of our own history since. Our walking tours travel back in time to tell the many stories of the streets, buildings, events, and personalities, which have shaped the history of this special place over the decades.

Tours take place Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 AM – 1130 AM starting at our historic movie house, The Regent Theatre at 224 Main Street, which opened in 1918 against the backdrop of the Spanish Flu epidemic.

Other tour stops include Picton’s Carnegie Library, and the public artwork “Holding Court”, a work by renowned Canadian artist Ruth Abernethy, which commemorates the early years in Picton of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Tours also visit Picton’s United Church, the site of the first Canadian Methodist congress in 1824, and the Downes-Falconer house, home of artist Captain John Pepper Downes, who drew 12 remarkable pencil sketches of the town in the late 1840s.

Tours end at the 555 Brewery Company, where you are invited to enjoy a sampling of their draft beers and enjoy one of their signature pizzas for lunch.
